There’s no shortage of new games to play this October, as series like Super Mario Bros., Marvel’s Spider-Man, Forza Motorsport, Assassin’s Creed, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Alan Wake are all getting new entries. However, if you can take some time away from it all, you’ll have a great time playing in style Wyrd’s Hellboy Web.
Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, the popular satanic comic book character who has starred in several films and even a few games, finally has a solid video game presence thanks to Upstream Arcade and Good Shepherd Entertainment. It’s a relatively simple action roguelite, but it has some of the best visuals of the year that look like they were taken straight from a comic book. Whether you’re a Hellboy fan or just want a stylish palate cleanser among all the big AAA mainstays coming out this month, Wyrd’s Hellboy Web worth a try.
In the Wyrd’s Hellboy Web, the titular character works alongside the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) to investigate a supernatural energy surge. During that mission, he discovered a place called the Butterfly House and discovered the gateway to the Wyrd. Once Hellboy enters the Wyrd to save the other members of the BPRD, he is labeled the “Protagonist” by its inhabitants and must fight many creatures in that dimension while learning more about the Butterfly House and its creator.
It’s a supernatural, but not scary story that fits into the Hellboy mythos without distracting from it too much. What makes it fit into the comic world is the game’s visual style. While I wish the cutscenes borrowed some of the comics’ more dynamic tricks, the gameplay delivers one of the slickest and most faithful comic book video games you can watch. The most impressive thing about Dead WestPrevious Upstream Arcade games, had a cel-shaded art style, and got better in Wyrd’s Hellboy Web, because the game looks like the comic book that inspired it. Hellboy’s bright red color appears in the dark, cream-colored Butterfly House and the typically darker locations he explores in the Wyrd. Every punch Hellboy throws or delivers will appear visually to increase its impact as well, making it penetrating Wyrd Network really felt like I was playing around with the comic.
If you’ve always enjoyed Mignola’s art on the Hellboy comics or just like games that forgo realism in favor of a beautiful art style, you’ll want to check this out. Wyrd’s Hellboy Web in action. Upstream Arcade also emphasizes simple but satisfying style and gameplay. It’s a cliche to say that superhero games make you feel like a superhero at this point, but Wyrd’s Hellboy Web The gameplay is directly designed to reflect the fact that Hellboy is a powerful and durable creature who can deal more damage than he takes.
Hellboy and the most powerful enemy in Wyrd Network not only does it have a health bar, but also a toughness bar. No one will take lasting damage until the toughness bar is completely depleted, so it’s a race to see who can stun their opponent first by reducing their toughness bar. What this means is that the basic loop of combat is to lock onto an enemy, hit them with weak and strong attacks as part of a four-hit combo, and then respond when the enemy tries to attack by dodging or blocking. It initially looks like a Soulslike design, but stands out because of the system it rewards blocking.
While some attacks should be avoided, it is often better if Hellboy defends and blocks attacks using toughness. Parrying is also possible if you press the block button at the right time. This adds to Hellboy’s payback meter, which can be used to perform attacks that deal massive damage. Add upgrades, run-specific power-ups, charms, environmental interactions that can damage enemies, and alternative weapons like pistols that can be used to extend combos, and Hellboy will feel unstoppable when a run goes well.
It’s not the most complex action game ever; My basic block, parry, then attack strategy even got me through many of the game’s boss fights largely unscathed. The lack of a map also makes exploration between battles confusing at times. Still, when Wyrd’s Hellboy Web action smoothly during intense combat, this is one of the most beautiful comic book video games ever. October 2023 is full of AAA game releases in all forms, and if you’re a little overwhelmed by all the games this month has to offer, kick back and play through the basic yet charming games Wyrd’s Hellboy Web is an excellent choice.
Wyrd’s Hellboy Web now available for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
