However, this label applies to this wonderful 1977 Chrysler Newport St.Regis, documented YouTuber Lou Costabile in one of the episodes of “My Car Story” on his channel. It classic car with an amazing history and the condition it’s in is truly magnificent, with plenty of V8 power lurking under the hood.
The car has been owned by owner Don Hein since 2015, and everything stems from his desire to have a car that is as comfortable as possible. He is a real survivor in every sense of the word and has a great story to tell.

The Chrysler Newport is a huge car, and as Costabile points out near the beginning of the video, it really is a survivor. Although Hein is not its only owner, he confirms that this is an unrestored example with the original factory Spinnaker White paint. Close-up shots of the grille, headlights, Chrysler emblem, and chrome bumpers show that they are practically flawless.
Some of the close-up details are incredible, including the chrome hubcaps and white wheels typical of 1970s luxury cars. The side view of the Costabile shows just how long this Chrysler is, with the rear in particular boasting impressive length. Newport St. The Regis also has a white vinyl roof, and amazingly, it’s original and in equally pristine condition. White vinyl is hard to keep this clean because of the color, but Hein guarantees it’s in perfect condition.
Hein opens the trunk and reveals some goodies. Sheet on display as well as some insurance documents and options that help make this such a great find. Hine explains that he wanted it after seeing it in the survivor tent and just fell in love with how great it looked. He saw it for the first time back in 2003 and became friends with the owner, saying that if he ever sells it, he will call him first. After about 12 years, he was ready to sell the car, meaning Heim was able to buy the car he wanted so badly in 2003.

The relationship between Heim and the former owner of the car is so strong that he even promised to sell it back if he sold it himself. From the care and attention given to the car, it is clear that Heim loves this particular Newport very much. Heim explains that the car has every possible option except electric windows. It was because of the grandchildren of the original owner and she didn’t want them messing with it and potentially breaking it.
Even the locks on this Newport are electric, and the inside of the doors show the pristine condition of the handles and leather sills. The seats are also in incredible condition, the leather shows no signs of wear and are complemented by beautiful red seat belts. The rear seats are also in excellent condition and still have the embossing on the seats. We got a good look at the dash and steering wheel, and they’re as clean as the rest of the Chrysler, showing how well they’ve held up over the years.
No lettering on the controls has worn off, and the car has an AM/FM cassette player inside. This was an addition by the previous owner but is period correct for the car. When it comes to mileage, this car is on the lower end of the scale. It has covered just over 35,500 miles since 1977, which also helps explain the incredible condition it’s in. All the interior lights work and Hine even shows us the ashtray of a car that has never seen a cigarette.
This Newport St. Regis is well maintained
Under the hood, it is as clean and pristine as the interior and exterior. We have a good look at the 195 hp 400 ci V8 powering the Chrysler, complete with an “ignition control computer” and original decal. In fact, all the labels are original, with minimal scuffing of any inscriptions. Some parts of the engine compartment are easy to access, while other components are more difficult to access. But it is obvious that this is a car that has had a high level of maintenance over the years.
Newport St. Regis was prone to electronic failures
Just four years after the car’s launch, Chrysler found itself in need of a $1.5 billion bailout from the US Congress. This was due to bad decisions in the 1970s in the middle of the 1973 gas crisis. Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge ditched small-body cars in favor of larger, gas-guzzling cruisers at a time when gas prices were skyrocketing and emissions regulations were eating away at car performance.
The electronics inside this St Regis were also prone to failure due to the heat the engine was dissipating, causing all sorts of problems. It is noteworthy that the computers in this example are still working and providing the car with the necessary electronics.
They were incredibly space-age at the time, and the system had eight sensors that fed a computer that just sat in a tiny box on the housing of the air cleaner. It’s amazing how pristine this Newport example is after more than 40 years. When this car was brand new, it cost the buyer $8,397.60, which was an incredible amount of money in the late 1970s.
