Hulu content now available on Disney+ as ‘beta’

If you’ve been waiting for Hulu to merge with Disney+ (especially now that Disney effectively owns all of Hulu), the wait is over because you can now get Hulu shows and movies inside the Disney+ app.

And… that’s enough. This is part of a previously announced “beta” test to bring everything under one roof. (A full official launch is said to be in March.) And we say “beta” in quotation marks there because, unlike traditional beta testing where you participate in beta testing, this test just happens. The reason for the beta moniker, CEO Bon Iger said in November, is that it “gives parents time to set up the profile and parental controls that best suit their family.”

It’s all pretty simple: If you also subscribe to Hulu, you’ll now see the Hulu logo inside the Disney+ app, both on your mobile device and the streaming platform. (I use both an iPhone and an Apple TV, for what it’s worth.) Click, and you’ll be presented with a world of content currently available on Hulu.

Hulu content is also returned as search results from the top level of the app, which is exactly how you’d expect it to work.

One thing that doesn’t convert is any “continue” playlist. If you’re watching a show or series on Hulu, it looks like you’ll have to open it directly in the Disney+ app to get back to where you left off. While this isn’t a deal breaker, it’s worth noting.

If not? Everything seems to go exactly as you expect. You must have a Disney+ account and a Hulu account to take advantage of it. And if not? Disney+ will happily upgrade you for a small fee.
