Forgotten (2013)

Universal Pictures

Tom Cruise is the king of popcorn movies. The 61-year-old man has repeatedly mentioned how much he loves entertaining audiences. Nobody’s asking him to get off a plane or ride a motorbike down a mountain, but we appreciate Cruise’s commitment to making every film special. When Top Gun: Maverick And Mission: Impossible – The Fall has been greeted with universal praise, Oblivion is still Cruise’s most underrated blockbuster.

Directed by his future self Mavericks collaborator Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion stars Cruise as Jack Harper, a drone repairman stationed on a desolate Earth in the year 2077. Alien scavengers invaded Earth nearly 50 years earlier, making Earth uninhabitable. Jack plans to join his fellow survivors on a mission to Saturn’s moon in two weeks, but his plans are put on hold by the arrival of an unnamed woman (Olga Kurylenko) whom Jack dreams of. The woman’s arrival triggers a series of events that threaten the fate of humanity, forcing Jack to choose sides in a battle for the future.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

We are running out of ways to describe excellence Mad Max: Fury Road. Excellence may not be strong enough to describe George Miller’s 2015 dystopian masterpiece. Since its release, no action film has been better than it Path of Rage. Is this the best action film of the 21st century? It’s definitely in progress.

Set in the desert, the film follows Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), who has been captured and imprisoned in a Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). One of Joe’s lieutenants, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), flees the Citadel in a heavily armored truck called a War Rig with his five wives. Max escapes the Citadel and reluctantly joins Furiosa as they make their way through the desert. Joe isn’t going to let them go without a fight, and his marauding squad follows close behind in their war vehicles, leading to one of the most impressive street battles you’ll ever see.
