Is this our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6?

Samsung has had a very busy 2024, from launching three new Galaxy S phones to teasing the upcoming Galaxy Ring. Now, we’ve reportedly got our first look at the company’s upcoming foldable device – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Early in the morning of February 28, leaker @OnLeaks collaborated with SmartPrix to share design renderings of the Fold 6. At first glance, the Fold 6 is very similar to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5. There’s a narrow 6.2-inch cover screen on the outside, and when the Fold 6 is opened, you get a picture of the 7.6-inch inner screen. It is reported that the dimensions of the Fold 6 measure 153.5 x 132.5 x 6.1 mm when opened, making it slightly shorter and wider than the Fold 5.

There’s one big design change here, and it’s visible in the phone’s frame. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 appears to have a flatter frame and sharper corners than its predecessor, not dissimilar to similar design elements seen on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Ultra. It’s hard to say how striking this altered design will look or feel in person, but it’s something to look out for.

However, beyond that, there really isn’t much new compared to the Galaxy Z Fold entries of recent years. There’s a triple camera system on the back, a hole for the camera on the cover screen, and an under-screen camera under the inner screen. You also still have a USB-C charging port, a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button, and the usual placement for the volume buttons, microphone, etc. The renders show the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in black, which seems like a safe bet, and we can almost certainly expect additional colors as well once the release time arrives.

While it’s not surprising to see Samsung possibly playing it safe again with the Z Fold 6, it’s still disappointing. So small seems to be changing. In a market where OnePlus Open is present, Google is poised to do interesting things with the Pixel Fold 2, and other smaller companies are also joining the foldable race, a year of delayed upgrades for the Fold 6 isn’t the best news. We’ll almost certainly see performance improvements and new AI features like we did with the S24 family, but beyond that, things seem pretty quiet.

We still don’t know what changes (if any) Samsung has made to the Fold 6’s battery life, camera, software, etc., so much remains to be seen. But if the design is any indication of what kind of year the Z Fold series will be, don’t hold your breath for a revolutionary release this year.
